Quick, easy & useful winter essential oil recipes for you & your family

Why are essential oils an important healthcare tool?

Most winter ailments affect our respiratory system. Essential oils are volatile extracts from plants and their unique make-up allows their absorption into our body directly through inhalation. Pills or tablets have to compete with other things in our stomach before they are eventually absorbed. Essential oils provide instant relief and speedy recoveries, as they are entered through the body via our breath.

Essential oil plants

(Above: Peppermint, Thyme Thymol, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree and Chamomile Roman)

Peppermint (organic) Mentha piperita

Peppermint oil is one of my favourites as it is versatile and immediately effective. It’s fabulous at clearing your head and sinuses. I don’t go anywhere without this oil.

Tip 1: Add 1-2 drops into a ceramic bowl with hot water and hold your head over it for a few minutes. Breathe deeply under a towel to intensify.

Tip 2: Apply 1 drop on the back of your hand then lick. This will clear your sinuses and refresh your breath instantly. Repeat as needed, but no more than eight times per day.

Thyme Thymol (organic) Thymus vulgaris

Thyme Thymol oil is a powerhouse of immune stimulant compounds as it makes all germs run for the hills.

Tip 3:  Add 5 drops to a hot bath or foot bath. Repeat daily for 5 days to nip a cold or flu in the bud. Complement the remedy with 5 drops of Eucalyptus or Lavender Spike oil to enhance the scent.

Tip 4: Rub 1-2 drops onto the soles of your feet before bedtime to let it work its magic while you sleep.

Eucalyptus (organic) Eucalyptus Australiana

Eucalyptus oil is a timeless winter respiratory remedy used famously to ease coughs, chest congestions, scratchy throats while helping to enhance your immunity.

Tip 5: Add 5 drops to the sole of each foot, put on warm socks and go to bed. You will taste it within 5 minutes - that’s how quickly it goes to work throughout your body.

Tip 6: Add 10 drops to your bath or diffuser to purify the air or ease cold symptoms.

Tea Tree oil (organic) Melaleuca alternifolia

Tea Tree essential oil is super effective at getting the job done. With a strong focus on helping your immune system destroy germs of any calibre.

Tip 7: Add 5 drops to your bath or diffuser to purify the air and kill germs. For a more pleasant scent, add 5 drops Eucalyptus oil and 5 drops Lavender Spike. This blend knocks me back into shape every time.

Chamomile Roman (organic) Anthemis nobilis

Kind and gentle, soothing your aches and pains, and easing fevers. It’s like the hot milk with honey my mum brought me to make me feel better as a child.

Tip 8: If using Chamomile Roman Pure then add 2 drops to a hot bath with 5 drops Lavender Spike, rest for 15min and hop into bed with a hot water bottle.

Tip 9: If using Chamomile Roman in Jojoba then use 20 drops which is massaged over the spine three to five times per day to ease body aches and manage fevers safely (suitable for children).

I hope these tips were helpful. Stay healthy and well.
