I’m dreaming of a sustainable Christmas

The festive season is supposed to be a time of peace, happiness and joy, yet increasingly it’s become a time of stress and crazy consumerism. The pressure to get your Christmas shopping done can result in poor decisions and rushed purchases - ‘stocking fillers’ that, in reality, end up as landfill not long after the 25th.

According to recycle.co.nz, the waste we Kiwis generate in the week over Christmas almost doubles to an extra 50,000 tonnes*. (That’s equivalent to more than 14,000 20-foot containers stacked on top of each other, 105 times taller than the Sky Tower - just staggering!)

And while, of course, that whopping load of rubbish isn’t all discarded presents (there’ll be a significant amount of packaging, wrapping and food / drink-related waste in there too), I do recall a disturbing fact from Annie Leonard’s “The story of stuff” (see link below), where her research revealed that of the materials flowing through the consumer economy, only 1% remain in use six months after sale**. Hard to believe really.

Makes me think how important it is to be extra mindful at this time of year. To take steps to minimise our trash, and make every gift count.

I’d say start by taking a breath, and connecting with the spirit of the season and the essence of the people you’re buying for before you head out to the shops. And if you really have the future health of our planet at heart, you’ll be a conscious consumer, only buying products that are ethically sourced and sustainably produced.

Top of your list could be a few of our essential oils or pure blends – I find they are always received with joy. Of course we prefer them to be used and appreciated (not just bought for the sake of it!), so if you need help, advice or any expert guidance matching the right Absolute Essential oil, blend or gift to the person, please don’t hesitate to email us at customerservice@absoluteessential.com

You’ll find a lot of information (and inspiration) on our website too. Absolute Essential vouchers and diffusers make wonderful presents. We also produce beautiful gift sets, all wrapped up and ready to go in eco-boxes made from Nepalese Lokta-bush paper (this is part of a unique company initiative, whereby we support traditional handcraft and sustainable forest enterprise in recovering earthquake communities – you can read more about it here).
