EASY TO MAKE ORGANIC AFTERSHAVE WITH UNIQUE NATURAL AROMAS

Ok, so now I’m on a roll. My last post was on how to make natural fragrance and cologne, today I want to tell you how to make a good natural aftershave. And I’m talking about much more than a splash of sexy masculine fumes on a strong jawline.

When we shave our body (legs, bikini line, face, armpits…), we expose our delicate outer skin layers to a harsh scraping that is drying and irritating (not to mention nicks and cuts).

You could argue that fragrance (sexy or not) is the least important quality of an aftershave.

An aftershave that really serves well will contain moisturising, healing and soothing properties to help restore natural balance and leave skin smooth and supple. It will also contain cooling and astringent properties that help to clean and close up the pores against rashes and pimples.

Your skin is the first place where signs of toxicity and stress from impurities will show up

It makes absolutely no sense to use synthetic ingredients, or less than pure healthful ingredients if the original goal is to achieve smooth, soft, healthy-looking skin. So yet again, therapeutic plant oils offer the surest way to give your body exactly what it needs the most. And of course, with pure essential oils in the mix, you can enjoy the benefits of delicious natural aroma to boot.

How to make your own skin super-food aftershave

Blend together:

The scent in this blend will be smooth and woody, with a refreshing citrus element, and it brings a whole host of therapeutic benefits that you will see from the information below. It does have a sexy, more masculine feel to it, which I like, but if you want a more specifically feminine fragrance, you can simply change your essential oil choices.

This recipe below will have a softer, more floral finish with a gentle sweet smoothness:

What is good about the ingredients in my aftershave blend?

Organic Aloe Vera Gel - If you don’t have the plant in your garden this is the next best thing. And for cosmetic purposes it is more convenient and stable for storage. Made from reconstituted organic Aloe Vera powder it is hydrated with organic distilled Lavender floral water that brings even more soothing and restorative properties. Aloe Vera is of course packed with beneficial properties. It is cooling, healing and wonderfully nourishing. With anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-bacterial properties, proteins and minerals for skin repair, you couldn’t invent a better after-shave balm if you tried.

Lavender Sweet - Known as a middle note in perfumery terms and an enhancer. This means that its scent is a balanced constant and it has a pleasant fragrance that integrates well to complement the overall aromatic synergy. Lavender is a calming, restorative oil. It has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, and it is also antiseptic and cleansing. It is a wonderful skin oil with moisturising and nutrient qualities, plus it is very relaxing therapeutically on the mind and emotions.

Petitgrain Bigarade - This is what is called a top note and an enhancer. This means it accentuates and enriches the blend with its fresh herbal hues and citrus tang. Petitgrain has antiseptic and deodorising properties and is very toning on the skin. It is also calming and restorative on the emotions.

Sandalwood Australian - A base note and an enhancer. Sandalwood will leave a lovely lingering scent of woody musk and it will smooth and enrich the blended fragrance. Sandalwood is very toning on the skin. It has antiseptic, astringent and emollient properties, and it is sensual, calming and restorative for mind and emotions.

Geranium Rose - A middle note and an enhancer. Geranium Rose brings an enriching, sweet floral balance with a hint of mint. It is astringent, deodorising and wonderfully tonic on the skin. It is also balancing both on the skin and emotions.

Rosewood - A middle note and an equalizer. This means it is a gentle constant that will bring a lovely harmony to your blend. It has soothing and antiseptic qualities and promotes skin rejuvenation. Therapeutically, rosewood is very toning and balancing.

The best part of blending in this way is the autonomy that it gives you to find a balance that works well for you. In my how to make your own cologne post, you will find a chart of fragrant essential oils aligned with their aromatic qualities and their therapeutic values. If you feel adventurous and want to experiment further (though for a skin blend, especially around the citrus scents, be sure to get more detailed information on possible phototoxicity and hypersensitivity).
